Wolverhampton children in extra four month adoption wait

Children in care in Wolverhampton are waiting 125 days longer than targeted to move in with an adopted family, figures show.

The council has set a target time of 548 days between a child entering care and then moving in with a family.

But latest figures from the end of 2014 show the average time is 673 days.

In a report which goes before the local authority's performance management panel next week, the issue has a high risk rating.

Councillor Paul Sweet, council chief for governance and performance, will chair the meeting.

The report states: "Although performance is above target in this area, it is improving.

"The cases that are taking a long time between coming into care and being adopted are generally legacy cases where the child has been in care for some time or are harder to place children, such as older children or sibling groups.

"For more recent cases where children have come into care and the plan is for adoption, timeliness is generally much better. Although Wolverhampton's performance against this indicator is below target, we perform better than the national average and comparator peers in terms of the numbers of adoptions generally."
