The 12-month programme of work will include replacing kitchens and bathrooms, upgrading boilers and decorating rooms.

The centres in Bournville, Nechells and Acocks Green provide emergency accommodation for almost 150 households in crisis, many of whom are fleeing from domestic violence or fires. The centres are staffed 24 hours a day, 365 days a year ensuring families are supported before moving on to live independently.

Birmingham City Council's cabinet member for Health and Wellbeing, Councillor John Cotton, said: "This programme of work is essential if we are to make sure that the most vulnerable in our city are looked after properly when they are faced with a crisis situation. It also means that we can avoid the use of expensive and unsuitable bed and breakfasts."
