The change to the limit on Penn Road will see the legally permissible speed brought down from 40mph for the southern end of the road towards Lloyd Hill island.

Wolverhampton City Council wants to bring in the change after residents voiced concerns about road safety in the area.

Work on a new pedestrian crossing on Penn Road between Buttons Farm Road and Springhill Lane is due to start in the coming weeks.

Penn Councillor Paul Singh welcomed the move, saying Penn Road has become dangerous for pedestrians and motorists in recent years due to the increase in traffic along the route.

He said: "The southern end of the Penn Road running down to Lloyd Hill island had been 40mph for many years but the amount of traffic has increased such that this has become dangerous to drivers and to pedestrians alike.

"The change will make little difference to traffic flows but are a major help to road safety, along with the new crossing, which has long been called for."
