The Highways Agency is leading on the work is on the bridges on the link road between the southbound M6 to the M5 which includes Ray Hall Viaduct, the River Tame Bridge and Wigmore Viaduct.

Lane and full carriageway closures along with temporary speed limits will lead to delays until the end of May.

Highways chiefs in Walsall have warned the improvement work means many more drivers trying to get in and around Walsall are now using the A454, A34 and Black Country Route leading to large build-ups of traffic at rush hour.

Colin Jackson, of the Highways Agency said: "We are sorry for the inconvenience to motorists using the M6 to M5 southbound link for their journeys, particularly during peak hours.

"We always aim to minimise disruption, and if we could have avoided peak times then we would have done so. Unfortunately we have to use a permanent lane closure because of the time needed to complete each sequence of repairs."

Walsall Council transport chief Councillor Lee Jeavons, said:"We appreciate this is frustrating for people who have to travel at rush hour but the end result will be safer roads for us all."
