Severn Trent is working to repair the sewer, in Upper Villiers Street in Blakenhall.

The sewage system in the street will work as normal but cars won't be allowed to pass through until it has been fully repaired.

Severn Trent spokeswoman Sarah-Jayne O'Kane apologised for any convenience caused.

She added: "We're happy to say that when the collapse happened, we responded very quickly and there was no pollution to the surrounding area.

"While we do the repair work, the waste water coming down the sewer will be pumped around the damaged section of pipe so that the system continues to work as normal and local homes and businesses waste service is not disrupted.

"As the sewer is a brick sewer, it's a difficult job to repair it and so unfortunately we have had to close Upper Villiers Street to traffic.

"We'd like to apologise to anyone affected – we know this is inconvenient and we'll do everything we can to get the repair done and everything back to normal as quickly as possible.

"We expect the work to go on until the end of next week."
