Eastfield Nursery School in Griffin Street was welcoming back its 150 pupils after being closed for two days.

The thieves caused thousands of pounds worth of damage at the weekend and took the pupils' Children in Need money and five brand new iPads.

Headteacher Emma Smith said, despite the devastation, the reaction from the community had been heart-warming.

"It has been hard to turn the children away because they have been asking why bad people have hurt their nursery," she said. "The staff are shocked because the nursery is a little safe haven and then this has happened.

"We handed the CCTV to police and we just hope that someone in the local community knows the people who have done this.

"The parents have been fantastic. We had a number of them offering to help clear up the school and some have said they will listen out for any information in the community. It has brought people together."

Deb Edmonds, spokeswoman for West Midlands Police, said: "It is believed the offenders returned to the site several times over the weekend. Police are making inquiries and currently reviewing all available CCTV. "
