"We're the people's army" – that was the message from Neil and Christine Hamilton last night when they attended the launch of a UKIP manifesto.

The couple were at Greets Green Social Club in West Bromwich, which had a crowd of more than 50.

Mr Hamilton, who served as an MP for more than a decade, was the main speaker for the night, which also included a speech from Graham Eardley, the party's parliamentary candidate for West Bromwich.

Mr Hamilton said: "We're the people's army on the march. We have come tonight because we want to win the general election in West Bromwich and throughout the West Midlands. Immigration is going to be the big issue in the General Election next year and UKIP addresses this issue.

"The border is only as strong as its weakest point and our border is no longer the sea. It's the border between Greece and Turkey or Romania and Moldova.

"I would tell people to join the people's army and take back your country. It doesn't have to be like this."

The couple, who became household names following Mr Hamilton's political career and by appearing on television shows, including Who Wants to be a Millionaire? chatted to supporters of the party before the speeches began. The former barrister left politics in 1997 after the Cash for Questions scandal, only to return in 2011 when he was elected as a member of the National Executive Committee for UKIP.

This year, Mr Hamilton ran for election for Wandsworth Borough Council elections but came eighth out of nine candidates. Their unlikely career as TV personalities began when they appeared on Have I Got News For You and Mr Hamilton told viewers 'I've found it's much better making political jokes than being one'.

Christine has appeared on I'm A Celebrity . . . Get Me Out Of Here!, Come Dine With Me and Celebrity MasterChef.
