Wolverhampton City Council was today at the site of Wednesfield High School, in Lakefield Road, assessing the extent of the damage following the suspected arson attack on Sunday night.

Fire crews were called to Wednesfield High School at 6.15pm yesterday following reports of smoke coming from a disused building.

Within minutes a plume of thick black smoke could be seen up to three miles away, and 20 firefighters were required to tackle the blaze.

The disused school building is owned by the local authority and is due to be demolished within the next few months.

The council said it had already planned to flatten the site prior to the fire, and is set to dispose of the land by 2016.
