The TalkSPORTpundit from Staffordshire aimed several tweets in the direction of Ben Walker, a UKIP councillor for Bradley Stoke in South Gloucestershire.

The former England international said he had lodged an official complaint against Councillor Walker's conduct, but the councillor retorted that Collymore's comments were 'baffling and abhorrent'.

The politician said he believed the feud dated back to a row sparked by Collymore's claims that Britain had 'thieved' ownership of the Falkland Islands earlier this year.

Councillor Walker admitted telling his social network followers 'let's keep it going' after Collymore was dropped by Match of the Day 2.

Collymore posted: "I'll cause as much offence to UKIP as I can within the law Councillor Ben Walker. Your party is disgusting, has racists in it and tricks the public."

Councillor Walker served in the Falklands himself with the Royal Navy and said: "He (Collymore) has a point of view.

"But when he's challenged he doesn't like it, becomes quite abusive and plays the race card.

"He thinks I'm trying to invite hatred against him, but all this was ages ago.

"This is out of the blue."
