Twenty fire engines were called to Northfield Manor House, off Bristol Road South, Northfield, Birmingham.

Fire tore through the roof of the building, which has been empty for several years.

West Midlands Fire Service increased the number of crews at the scene to 20 at around 9.30pm as crews battled to bring the blaze under control.

Officials said 15 pumps had originally been called to the scene.

The high volume pump from Sheldon Fire Station and two hydraulic platforms were also called.

Smoke from the fire was visible from the Lickey Hills.

The building is disused after last being used as a halls of residence by the University of Birmingham in 2007.
