An elderly man had been burning rubbish in the back garden of a home in Shepwell Green, Willenhall.

He went to the shops and the fire spread to his home.

Two men were inside the property at the time. They were both treated by paramedics. One of the men was taken to Walsall Manor Hospital as precaution.

Fire crews from Bilston, Walsall and Tipton attended the scene yesterday at around 1.30pm.

Bilston crew commander Neil Baker said: "Someone had been burning rubbish and it spread to the extension of the house.

"Damage was caused to a double glazed window. We offered the elderly man fire safety checks."
