But fast forward 12 months and Parrys International has unveiled a new £4 million fleet of luxury coaches meaning the happy holidaying will continue for the foreseeable future.

Two thousand people flocked to the Staffordshire firm's annual open day on Sunday after managing director Dave Parry announced he was reversing his decision to retire from the company he started 41 years ago after customer and supplier power persuaded him to carry on, securing the job of 40 workers. In just five hours at the open day the company took 300 trip bookings worth £45,000.

Mr Parry, who started the company 41 years ago, said: "The response was incredible. A year ago we were closing and the influx of letters and comments was like someone had died. We had suppliers and customers demanding we stay operating so we changed our minds."

The 65-year-old added: "We are the first in the UK with these coaches and we think the first in the world with its entire fleet made up of them."
