Henry, the man who led the club to the Premier League but was sold to QPR in last summer's purge following successive relegations, backed his former team-mate in the row which blew up when Hennessey refused to play at Gillingham on Friday.

The 26-year-old Wales international keeper, who is expected to leave the club during this month's transfer window, has since apologised to Jackett and the club.

But Henry made his feelings clear on the issue by tweeting last night: "@WayneHennessey1 is a fantastic professional who has been treated like s*** by Kenny Jacket." (sic)

The tweet was still visible on his account today. Wolves fans pounced on the comment, continuing the firestorm that has followed the controversy triggered in the build up to the 1-0 defeat at Gillingham.

Hennessey was in line to replace Carl Ikeme after this season's first-choice keeper was ruled out for six weeks with a broken hand but amid mounting speculation that a transfer to Crystal Palace was in the pipeline he decided against playing.

Jackett criticised the goalkeeper for his decision and although the pair have subsequently patched things up, Henry's uncompromising tweet has re-opened the row.

Wolves legend Steve Bull today said Henry should not have got involved.

"Karl has been just as stupid getting involved in Twitter. I know what that is – that's Karl sticking up for an old mate, " he said.

And he added: "You understand that but he should not have got involved.

"I think he realised that which is why he deleted the comment. Like all Wolves fans, I just want a line drawn under all this and for the team to get on with the only thing that matters this season, promotion."

The former Wolves midfielder is a close friend of Hennessey's and is known to have been unhappy at being among the crop of players banished by Jackett when he took over from Dean Saunders following Wolves' drop into League One.
