Fire investigators have been combing the wreckage of the Strykers bowling alley which burnt to the ground on Sunday.

They spent yesterday dampening down the remains of the building and hunting for hot spots which could still be smouldering. Fire crews were called at around 5.20pm on Sunday to the fire on Bushbury Lane.

At its height, around 100 firefighters from across the Black Country and Birmingham battled the blaze with up to 14 fire engines. Plumes of smoke billowed into the sky and flames towered above the building.

The fire was so intense firefighters were unable to enter the building and had to battle it from outside.

West Midlands Fire Service spokesman Matthew Smith said: "We have had two fire crews at the building for all of Monday, just keeping an eye on any hotspots. Fire investigators have also spent much of the day at the scene. We are trying to establish a probable cause of the fire, but at the moment that is not yet known."

The bowling alley closed suddenly in October, and the owners were due to put it on the market to be leased out again.

Owner of the building Sam Samra said he was devastated by the fire. He said: "I don't know what the cause of the fire is yet, and I haven't really had a chance to talk to the fire service. I do have a couple of meetings with them, so hopefully I will be able to find out a bit more."
