Staffordshire car parking fees cut to 10p in trial

Parking charges will be slashed to a nominal 10p rate under plans to boost high streets in Staffordshire.

The fee will come in for parking after 3pm on weekdays as part of a six month pilot scheme in Cannock and Rugeley.

The trial will run at car parks in Avon Road, Cannock and Forge Road, Rugeley.

The new rate represents a 97 per cent reduction on current prices for drivers parking up at 3pm and leaving when the car parks close at 6.30pm.

The move comes as it emerged bosses are predicting a £30,000 shortfall in parking income this year after revenue from car parks across Cannock, Rugeley and Hednesford dropped in the first four months of 2013.

Charges at Avon Road are 90p per hour, or £3.60 for three to four hours, while at Forge Road motorists pay 80p per hour or £3.20 for three to four hours.
