A woman was killed when the car she was in crashed with a lamppost at an accident blackspot in Wolverhampton, while a motorcyclist died in a smash in Stourport-on-Severn.

It comes as a child was also taken to hospital after being hit by a car in West Bromwich, while a man had to be pulled from his van after a crash in Kinver.

The smash in Wolverhampton happened on the Birmingham Road, close to its junction with Curzon Street.

Two men were also injured while the woman was pronounced dead at the scene.

Nearby residents rushed to help the trio at 3.45am yesterday morning with one witness describing the scene as 'carnage'.

One of the injured men was trapped inside the car from his waist down forcing emergency services to embark on a two-hour rescue operation to free him.

Both men, in their 30s, were taken to New Cross Hospital where they were said to be in a serious but stable condition.

Curzon Street resident Linda Knight was one of the first on the scene on Sunday morning.

She compared the noise of the crash to a loud crack of thunder.

"I heard a huge bang and came running out of the house," the 64-year-old said.

"The car was on its side and one of the people was up against the door, while another was hanging suspended inside the car. There was a lot of screaming, it was absolutely awful.

"I went over, as did a few others, but there was nothing we could do. A couple of guys were trying to get them out but they couldn't and others were telling them to wait for the paramedics in case they hurt them by moving them."

Fellow Curzon Street resident Desmond Ruddock, 39, said: "The car was an absolute wreck and you could tell it was serious straightaway.

"It was only last year when someone else died – they need to put some bumps in the road to slow people down and make the island in the middle of the carriageway more visible."

The crash came just hours after a motorcyclist lost his life after a smash with a car in Stourport-on-Severn. Paramedics were called to a crash between a van and the motorcycle on the A451 at around 4pm on Saturday.

Claire Brown, West Midlands Ambulance spokeswoman, said: "Crews arrived to find a motorcycle and a van which had been involved in a significant collision.

"Sadly, it quickly became apparent that nothing could be done to save the motorcyclist, a man, and he was confirmed dead on scene."

The driver of the van, a man in his 40s, also suffered a suspected hip injury and he was taken to Worcestershire Royal Hospital.

Meanwhile, a boy was hit by a car outside Oak House Museum in West Bromwich at around 3.30pm yesterday. The youngster was not believed to have been seriously injured after the collision with a silver Volvo.

A man was also taken to hospital after the van he was travelling in came off the road on the A449 between Kingswinford and Kidderminster at 3.30am on Sunday.

The driver, who was in his 20s, was removed from the van and taken to Russells Hall Hospital in Dudley with minor injuries.

The accidents come after a spate of serious crashes around the Black Country and Staffordshire, which have left police urging drivers to take care on greasy roads after dry weather, followed by rain and thunderstorms.
