Sussex confirmed today there were four football-related arrests on Saturday, despite fears the high stakes game could lead to trouble.

Those held included two 19-year-old men from Stafford, who were arrested for public order offences over alleged homophobic chanting. They both received public order fixed penalty notices.

Two men from Wolverhampton were meanwhile charged with failing to comply with a notice to leave a public area.

They are Darren Howell, 43, a bricklayer, of Wilkes Road, Codsall and Steven Cane, aged 45.

Cane did not provide an address or his occupation, officers said. Both men were bailed.

Supt Simon Nelson, who led the force's operation at the Amex Stadium on Saturday, said: "I am pleased to report that there were only four arrests in the city centre that were connected to the football.

"Given the importance of the match for both sides I'd like to thank fans for cooperating with officers and match officials."

More than 30,000 fans attended Saturday's game and around 120 police officers were deployed in the city and at the stadium."

The heightened police presence came after around 300 fans invaded the pitch at Molineux after the 2-1 defeat to Burnley, leaving the club on the brink of its second relegation in two years, which was confirmed this weekend.
