New pub's leaky roof to force Oldbury road closure

A road in Oldbury will be shut for two days this week because the roof of a new £1 million pub leaks during heavy rain, it has been revealed.

Council bosses announced earlier this week how part of Market Street will close to allow a crane to be brought in for work to take place at the Court of Requests pub. A problem with a leak has emerged, as a result of guttering that cannot cope with sudden overloads of water. Pub chiefs say there is no substantial damage, but redecoration may be needed.

Wetherspoon spokesman Ashley Weller said: "The leak only seems to occur when the rain is particularly heavy, there were no problems during the snow.

"It is thought that it maybe a guttering problem, but the repair work will establish the exact cause."

Market Street will be closed from its junction with Church Street to its junction with the car park at the rear of the Court of Requests pub on Saturday and Sunday.

Vehicles are being advised to use Church Street, Wesley Street, and Queen Street.

"There is no substantial damage, the problem has been identified before that has occurred, some redecoration maybe required," said Mr Weller.

"The leak is only an issue on the first floor level, where the customer toilets are situated, not in the main bar/customer area.

"The cost of the work is unknown at this time, however, Wetherspoon would not issue this information."

The Court of Requests only opened its doors in Oldbury's former library in January last year, creating 40 jobs.

Before becoming a library in 1979, the building was used as a courthouse and police station. The court room on the first floor of the premises still has its original features.

A Court of Requests was a building for the recovery of debts in 1807. The pub will remain open during the work.
