It started in Switzerland on New Year's Day 2010 and has since raised thousands of pounds for Birmingham's Queen Elizabeth Hospital where he was treated.

The 24-year-old suffered severe burns to his hands, legs, arms and face when an armoured vehicle he was travelling in was bombed on September 19, 2005.

He had been in Iraq just five months when then the attack took place.

Karl's regiment had been taking part in a rescue operation to free two British soldiers captured and held in Basra at the time. He was flown back to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital. His burns were so bad he had to learn to walk again.

Karl said completing the challenge, on New Year's Eve had felt like the "end of an era"and promised further fundraising would be taking place over the next year.
