Drivers will be forced to slow down outside schools in Staffordshire, with new 20mph zones to be introduced to crack down on speeding motorists.

Council bosses have announced the new measures at five schools in response to pleas from residents fed-up of motorists driving dangerously and putting children at risk.

Schools to benefit are Chase Terrace Technology College, in Burntwood; Nether Stowe School, in Lichfield; John Bamford Junior School, in Rugeley; Great Wyrley High School and Bishton Hall, in Stafford.

Flashing signs that warn drivers they are travelling too fast will also be in operation during the day under the scheme by the county council, which is called 20 is Plenty.

Staffordshire's road chief Mike Maryon said: ""The roll-out of the 20 is Plenty scheme is great news and testament that we are keen to listen to the views of residents and take necessary action.

"Speed indication devices which display and record the speed of every vehicle that passes past these schools will encourage drivers to reduce their speed and help protect the schoolchildren and other pedestrians.

"The scheme will build on the huge success and popularity of the project at many other schools in the county and help maintain our number one position in the UK for road safety.

"School speed indication devices will operate when pupils are arriving in the morning and leaving in the afternoon. They may operate at different times during the day only if it is deemed that there is a significant requirement."

The scheme was first launched in 2010 and will continue to benefit thousands of schoolchildren.
