Free parking for shoppers in West Bromwich

Shoppers will get free parking in the 1,900 parking spaces at the centre of the £200 million regeneration of West Bromwich, it was revealed today.

The spaces will serve customers for the giant Tesco Extra store, and major retailers, restaurants and the eight-screen Odeon cinema being built in the town.

Supermarket bosses have revealed there will be no charge to use the car park if customers spend a minimum amount in the store. That amount has not been set yet however.

It will work similarly to the scheme in place at Wednesbury's Morrisons store where customers who spend £5 can park for free.

It comes despite the revelation earlier this month that charges would be introduced on the 104-space car park to serve the £11m leisure centre on Moor Street, West Bromwich.

Retailers

Tesco spokesman Jonathan Simpson said: "It will be free parking for up to three hours when customers spend an amount in store. The amount has not been decided just yet."

A string of major retailers have already committed to the development including Primark, Next, JD Sports, Bank, Arcadia and the anchor Tesco Extra store along with Nandos and Prezzo.

Shoe retailer Deichmann and Phones 4 U were among the latest trio of names to sign up in July, along with restaurant chain Harvester.

The scheme will eventually create 2,000 new jobs and is expected to be open from summer 2013.
