Tom Watson sparked shock in the House of Commons yesterday when he alleged during Prime Minister's Questions that the police may have had evidence that a paedophile had "links to a senior aide of a former prime minister".

The MP for West Bromwich East said he had been contacted by people concerned that a historic case needed to be re-examined.

Mr Watson said that an evidence file concerning the conviction of paedophile Peter Righton in the 1990s was believed to contain "clear evidence of a widespread paedophile ring".

He said in the Commons: "One of its members boasts of his links to a senior aide of a former Prime Minister. If the files still exist, I want to ensure that the Metropolitan Police secure the evidence, re-examine it and investigate clear intelligence suggesting a powerful paedophile network linked to Parliament and Number 10."

Writing on his website the MP added: "Last week I was contacted by a former child protection specialist who for some years, had been concerned that a wider investigation regarding the activities of convicted paedophile Peter Righton was not fully investigated."

Mr Watson claimed there was material seized in the raid on Righton's home that had not been fully looked into. He said Righton was the subject of a BBC profile in 1994 but little has been done to follow up the leads from the case.

Concerns

He added:?"Over the last few days I have spoken to two other child protection specialists who share the concerns. Within the material seized at Righton's home were letters from known and convicted paedophiles.

"The contact, who has seen the letters, claimed that one paedophile in particular was of great concern. He said that the paedophile, who worked with children, boasted of a key aide to a former PM who could help get hold of indecent images of children."
