A newborn baby was today fighting for life after being found dumped with rubbish bins near a block of flats in Wolverhampton.

A woman has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder of the baby, thought to be just a few days old.

Police were called to a flat on Boscobel Crescent in Wolverhampton at around 6.30pm on Saturday to reports of a missing child.

And they today said that a "very young" baby was found in the refuse area of the flats, suffering with serious injuries.

The baby girl was taken to Birmingham Children's Hospital where she currently remains in a critical condition.

Police are investigating how the child came to be in the refuse area and were today conducting inquiries around the tower block today.

Detective inspector John Smith, from the force public protection unit, said: "We are making a number of inquiries to establish how this young baby has come to sustain her injuries, and how she came to be found in the refuse area of the flats.

"We are currently not seeking anyone else as part of our inquiries.

"We urge anyone who has information to help our investigation to come forward at the earliest opportunity."

As part of the investigation, a 24-year-old woman has been detained on suspicion of attempted murder, while a 32-year-old man is being questioned on suspicion of assisting an offender.

Both remained in police custody today.

West Midlands Ambulance sent the West Midlands Care Team, including doctors and nurses, to the scene, which is near the city's Asda supermarket, at around 6.45pm on Saturday.

It was not revealed today what injuries the baby is suffering from.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the West Midlands Police public protection unit on 101.
