Mass production of a famous tipple made by Wolverhampton's Marston's brewery is to cease after more than 125 years.

Ansells Mild, which became a favourite after-work drink for factory workers in the 20th century, will no longer be served in pubs after sales dropped.

The drink will still be brewed on a much smaller scale for social clubs, but regular pub-goers can no longer order a pint of Ansells Mild.

However Carsberg, the company through which Ansells Mild is sold, said the ale could still make a comeback if demand was there.

Spokeswoman Joanna Dring said: "Although we are not brewing it at the moment, this does not mean we won't ever brew it. On the contrary, if we could ensure enough pubs wanted to stock the beer and could be certain the volume we brew would guarantee quality, we would certainly consider brewing Ansells Mild again."

Drinkers have expressed dismay at the decision to axe the beer, which was first produced at Aston Cross in 1881.
