This is how the Cannock campus of South Staffordshire College will look if £6 million plans are approved by council chiefs.

The refurbishment will cost the college, which sits in the heart of Cannock town centre, around £4m. The Government's Skills Funding Agency would provide a £2m grant.

Work is due to get under way redeveloping the building in the summer and is due to be completed by September 2013.

A new glass-roofed atrium forms part of the plans for the Cannock campus. The major work will also include the removal of the main internal staircase and a lighter frontage and roof, with new glass panels added to the building.

In the paperwork sent to planning chiefs at Cannock Chase Council, the architects say the plan is to brighten up the college.

The college bosses also want to tighten up security on the site.

If the proposals are approved, there will be three new staircases with a 2,314ft overall increase in the building's size. There are no plans to increase enrolment numbers.
