The future of a popular wedding venue was in doubt today after it closed – leaving couples who had booked celebrations in the lurch.

Weston Hall, near Stafford, has been empty for two weeks and the telephone line is dead. It comes just two months after an earlier attempt to save the business.

Other venues in the area say they have received inquiries from brides-to-be seeking alternative locations.

The Grade II-listed Jacobean building is owned by local businessman Paul Reynolds. He could not be contacted by the Express & Star today.

Manchester-based businessman Seyed Deraviz was brought in last November, after the venue had been closed for a week following the departure of the venue's previous management.

He promised to honour existing bookings, retain all 12 staff and turn the restaurant into an Italian-themed eaterie. He was also unavailable for comment today.

The Moat House at Acton Trussell took over a booking last week from a couple who claimed to have lost their £4,000 deposit.

Sandon Hall, near Stafford, says it has also come to the rescue of a couple who had booked their reception at Weston Hall.

Manager John Guard said: "We've had a few inquiries but the problem is that most people have already booked the cars and photographers for that particular day, and they stand to lose more money if they change the date."

Barbara Swift, landlady of the Saracen's Head nearby, said: "It's such a shame. We can see the hall from here – it's a beautiful place in a picturesque setting but there have been no lights on there for two weeks."
