A 24-year-old man died today and another was seriously injured in a car crash in Oldbury as suspected thieves fled the scene of a burglary.

Churchbridge was closed for five hours following the smash between a Subaru Impreza and Fiat Qubo at 1am.

It is believed the Subaru had been involved in a burglary at the Co-op in Tame Road minutes earlier.

Police were called to the scene after a passer-by spotted a break-in.

The driver of the Fiat suffered fatal injuries and died later in Sandwell General Hospital. Two passengers were taken to Sandwell Hospital by ambulance following the crash.

One 44-year-old passenger received non-life threatening injuries and a third man received minor injuries.

Police say the occupants of the Subaru fled the scene.

Officers today said they later arrested two teenagers aged 16 and 17 nearby, who were in the Subaru at the time of the crash, on suspicion of burglary.

The 16-year-old today remains in Sandwell Hospital and was being treated for arm and facial injuries.
