Land Rovers are being targeted by thieves in the Midlands for their valuable bonnets, and just a handful are recovered, it was revealed today.

Nine of the Defender models were taken in the West Midlands, with a further seven taken in Staffordshire and two in the area patrolled by West Mercia Police. Two were recovered, but it is not clear what condition they were in. Owners are being warned to be on their guard.

Experts say most of the vehicles recovered are stripped for their parts, with later models targeted for their bonnets which can be transferred to older vehicles.

West Mercia Police officers have issued "Defend your Defender" posters to warn drivers.

Charlie Power of the Black Country Land Rover Club, said new-style bonnets had a bulge which was proving to be a sought-after feature.
