Walsall man arrested over lake tragedy

The motorist arrested over a horror collision which killed four members of the same family when their car ploughed into a Welsh reservoir is from the Black Country, it was revealed today.

Mechanic Gordon Dyche moved from Walsall to Powys a year ago. Before then, the 23-year-old had been living in Hollands Road, Blakenall Heath.

He was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving after a family’s people carrier careered 20ft down a bank and plunged into water in Llyn Clywedog, mid-Wales.

Dyche was driving a Ford Mondeo at the time of the collision on Wednesday. He has  been bailed pending further inquiries and is being comforted by his mother Karen and father Paul.

Speaking at the Walsall home before leaving for Wales, Paul Dyche, said: “My heart goes out to the family in the crash.”

Petrol station mechanic Gordon is now living in the market town on Llanidloes with his pregnant girlfriend.

Fourteen-year-olds Peter Briscombe and Liam Govier died along with their foster father Emyr, 66. Their foster mother Denise Griffith, 55, was the only survivor, her widowed mother Phyllis Hooper, 84, also died.

As their car careered along the slope it hit a boulder bonnet-first before  sinking 50ft into the water. Mrs Griffith, of Pontypridd, swam free.
