An 11-year-old Black Country boy savaged by a dog in a frenzied Christmas Day attack is doing well in hospital and was due to be sent home today.

Doctors at New Cross Hospital were expected to make a decision on whether Finn O'Mahoney could go back to his home in Whitmore Reans before lunchtime.

He was rushed to the hospital on Saturday after a stray dog taken in by the family went berserk as Finn watched Coronation Street at around 8pm.

The Chinese Shar-Pei attacked the youngster's face and left him needing emergency surgery at New Cross.

Specialist dog handlers had to be called in to get the dog under control. It has since been destroyed. The dog had been taken in by Finn's father Michael just days earlier.

New Cross Hospital today described Finn's condition as "satisfactory" adding: "He is doing very well."
