His broad smile and dulcet tones have greeted tens of thousands of people visiting the supermarket for their weekly shop.

ASDA greeter Colin Williams has welcomed young and old through the doors of the Wolverhampton store for eight years.

Little did the unassuming 63-year-old realise but he is fast becoming an internet sensation.

A group webpage on social networking site Facebook has been set up in his honour.

The 'Colin From Asda Wolverhampton' group already has 216 members and is growing by the day. A number of messages have been posted by wellwishers who have spotted the father-of-two in the store, off Molineux Way.

Many mention Colin's announcements over the tannoy on the website including 'Thank you for shopping with us here at ASDA'. And one post from Rob Jones says: "Top guy, it's about time we got Colin on an ASDA advert".

Colin said he was surprised to hear of his internet stardom.

"I was a bit embarrassed but I'm very proud and humbled that so many people have gone to that trouble for me," he said.

"Over the past eight years a lot of the customers have become friends. I did not think I was doing anything different from anyone else. It is a wonderful job because you get to meet so many nice people with stories to tell."

Colin, of Larkswood Drive, Lower Penn, joined Asda after been made redundant by engineering firm Glynwed International after 37 years.
