A Black Country shopper got more than she bargained for when she went into labour five weeks early at a supermarket checkout.

Sarah Miguel was relaxing in the cafe at Asda in Oldbury when she first felt a twinge but dismissed it, as her baby was not due for over a month.

But by the time she and her mum had finished their shop and were at the till, Sarah's contractions had sped up and she realised her baby was on its way. Staff rushed to the rescue, making Sarah comfortable while an ambulance was called.

The 27-year-old, of Woodhouse Road, Quinton, was then taken to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham. After an exhausting 14-hour labour, little Daniel was delivered, weighing just over 6lbs.

The tot spent the first hours of his life being cared for in the neonatal unit, before being declared healthy enough to be reunited with mum. Staff at the Wolverhampton Road store yesterday invited Sarah and five-week-old Daniel back to present them with goodies for the newborn.

Sarah said: "It was when I got to the checkout that the pain became unbearable. I was dancing around like Rocky and shouting at everybody."
