The latest Jaguar – powered by engines built in Wolverhampton – is already set to be the company's best selling Big Cat after going on the market.

The West Midlands-based car maker says advance orders for the new F-Pace are the best ever seen for a Jaguar.

The car is dubbed a crossover – part high performance estate car and part 4x4 – and has been put through its paces on sister company Land Rover's punishing Estnor test facility. The top performance version has the engine from the Jaguar F-

Type sports car under the bonnet but the biggest seller is expected to be the model powered by a two-litre Ingenium diesel made at Jaguar Land Rover's engine factory on the i54 site, beside the M54.

Engines are transported via the M54 and M6 to JLR's factory in Solihull, where the F-Pace is built alongside the Jaguar XE saloon, which was launched last year. Jaguar also employs the services of a number of companies in Shropshire within the supply chain, including body-in-white pressings specialist, Stadco, which makes body panels for the company, and Denso, which provides heating, ventilation and air conditioning units for the company.

The factory is due to start making petrol engines too this summer and work is already under way on doubling the size of the factory as JLR keeps its foot on the accelerator to build and sell more cars worldwide. Jaguar's design director Ian Callum said: "By remaining absolutely true to our design principles the all-new F-Pace is immediately recognisable as a Jaguar. It offers all of the interior space you would expect and more.

"But because of our disciplined approach to surfaces, proportions and purity of line, we have designed what I consider to be the most balanced, most attractive vehicle in its class. Every Jaguar should draw your eye from 200 metres away and I believe the all-new F-Pace's presence on the road is second to none in this class."

The lightweight aluminium architecture gave us the design freedom to create a car with latent poise – a svelte car with attitude.

"It looks assertive yet not aggressive. But it's also versatile and equipped with real-world answers to everyday questions. The all-new F-PaceE is an all-weather, all-surface Jaguar sports car, life-proofed for five people and their belongings."

Another new gadget is the Activity Key, a waterproof, shockproof wristband with an integrated transponder that allows the keyfob to be securely locked inside the vehicle – useful if you've going to get wet going surfing or kayaking.

The car was the star of an international launch event in Dubai earlier this month, and this week the UK's motoring press are getting their first chance behind the wheel at an event in the Cotswolds.
