The star and his band Wizzard are synonymous with this time of year with the Midlands-born musician as much a part of Christmas as turkey and mistletoe.

His appearance at the Robin 2 in Bilston last night was the first time he had been back on tour with his latest musical incarnation Roy Wood Rock & Roll Band for two years, after undergoing surgery on his back.

He said: "It's nice being back in the Midlands, I haven't played here in two years.

"The atmosphere is always good at the Robin 2, I really enjoy playing here."

The Birmingham-born singer and songwriter started his career in The Move, a band made up of musicians from across the West Midlands. While still playing in the band he set up the supergroup Electric Light Orchestra with fellow bandmates Bev Bevan and Jeff Lynne, but in 1972 he left ELO and set up the glam rock band Wizzard, best known for I Wish It Could Be Christmas Everyday.

Fans at last night's show were treated to an electric performance and enjoyed a number of hits from the band's frontman's illustrious career as well as many new songs.
