And this year's show has been officially launched with the finalists of the annual Eukanuba Friends for Life competition being announced.

The competition is run by the Kennel Club and celebrates uplifting stories of friendship in adversity.

Officials said the four dogs which had made the shortlist this year were selected for exceptional loyalty and the way they had changed their owners' lives. Among them is Lhaso Apso Ellie May, from Powys, Wales.

The nine-year-old dog has been living at the Oaklands Care Home for people with dementia since she was a puppy, helping to bring comfort and happiness to those alone and in need.

Ellie May was at the launch event with her owner Julie Cashell, 38.

Another finalist is Folly, from Birmingham. Folly helps owner Katy Evans, 24, who has cerebral palsy, and has given her a new lease of life.

Kennel Club secretary Caroline Kisko said: "All of the finalists for the Eukanuba Friends for Life competition demonstrate just how important dogs are to our lives."

The winner of the Eukanuba Friends for Life competition will receive £1,500 and the other finalists will receive £750 from the Kennel Club Charitable Trust, for their chosen charities. People can vote for their ultimate 'Eukanuba Friend for Life' at channel4.com/cruftsvote
