Unprecedented demand over the festive season has seen 1,170,399 parcels pass through the firm's national sorting centre in Warstone Road, Essington, since the start of December.

Bosses expect to process a further 323,919 parcels before Christmas Eve.

It comes as contractors are due to hand over APC's new £15m distribution centre at Kingswood Lakeside Business Park in Cannock by the end of the year, ready for staff to start moving into the new 150,000sq ft building early in 2013.

The new base will double capacity.

APC has increased staffing levels by up to a fifth at some of its 115 depots across the country over the Christmas period. Its busiest night was recorded on Monday.

Chief executive Syed Ziaullah said today: "The run-up to Christmas is always a busy time for us but this year has been the busiest yet.

"Thanks to the hard work of everybody we have been able to process all parcels so far and will continue to do so right up until Christmas.

"By next year we will be in the new facility, which is being built in response to a 15 to 18 per cent growth in the business.

"It will more than double the capacity of our Essington centre and ensure we will be able to process even more parcels at Christmas and throughout the year."
