West Midlands digital expert turned FE teacher on how he is helping close the UK’s £23bn digital skills gap

As the digital economy continues to expand, the need for essential digital skills has never been greater. According to new research, the UK economy could gain over £23 billion per year by equipping the workforce with essential digital skills.

In the West Midlands the demand for digital and technology roles is projected to grow significantly, with national estimates suggesting a 10% increase in digital sector employment by 2035. Yet, with 7.3 million UK adults currently lacking essential digital skills, the region - like much of the country - faces a widening skills gap. 

Alexander Hamilton, an FE teacher at Stoke-on-Trent College, is one of the educators helping to close the West Midlands’ digital skills gap. After years in the gaming industry, including starting his own company, Alex transitioned into Further Education (FE) and never looked back. What started as a guest lecture turned into a full-time passion - teaching digital skills that are vital to the future workforce. Now a Subject Lead in Creative & Digital at Stoke-on-Trent College, Alex draws on real-world experience to bring lessons to life, from VR and 3D printing to creative coding. For Alex, the reward lies in empowering students make their first steps into the industry. As the demand for digital talent grows, so does the need for educators who’ve lived it.  Alexander Hamilton, who has been teaching in FE for about 7 years, shares: “Every young person deserves the chance to discover what they’re capable of - and further education plays a vital role in opening those doors.  About the FE Teacher Recruitment campaign 

The Department for Education’s Teach in Further Education (FE) campaign is calling on those with industry experience to teach in FE by sharing their skills and training the next generation of workers in their field. 

FE teachers are needed across many subject areas, with particular demand for professionals from the following sectors: Health and Social Care, Construction, Engineering and Manufacturing, Digital and IT. 

Practical experience gained from industry is highly sought after and prior teaching qualifications or an academic degree isn’t always needed to start teaching in further education. Teacher training can be completed on the job, meaning FE teachers can begin earning straight away. 

There are full-time, part-time and flexible contracts available, allowing FE teachers to balance their hours alongside their current job or personal responsibilities.
