Wolverhampton businesses will 'thrive and grow' as revamped Victoria Street finally re-opens
The long-delayed pedestrianisation of Victoria Street has finally been completed – with bosses claiming it will "enable businesses to thrive and grow".
The main route in Wolverhampton city centre was transformed into a building site for 17 months as part of a controversial £15.7m scheme to boost footfall.
It was delayed numerous times and has led to the demise of at least seven businesses amid claims that Labour-run Wolverhampton Council has ignored pleas for support.
The stretch is set to host a celebratory event on June 3 described by organisers LSD Promotions as a day of "vibrant entertainment, delectable cuisine, and a treasure trove of unique, handcrafted goods".
Councillor Bhupinder Gakhal, Wolverhampton Council's cabinet member for visitor city, said: "Victoria Street is now fully open following extensive public realm improvement works that are part of a £22million package of investment in the west of the city centre.
"They are focused on creating better public spaces that will attract more visitors and enable businesses to thrive and grow through a blended approach of retail supported by events and activities in quality public spaces and city centre living."
