Fire crews work to tackle blaze at metal recycling plant in Coseley

Residents living near a metal recycling centre were warned to stay away from the area after a fire broke out.

The fire at the centre on Webb Street in Coseley was reported to West Midlands Fire Service around 7.15pm on Monday, with five fire engines and crews from Bilston, Dudley, Wolverhampton and Tipton dispatched to tackle the blaze.

The service said the incident was still on-going and warned residents to stay away which crews worked to extinguish the blaze.

A spokesman for West Midlands Fire Service said at the time: "We currently have four fire appliances with 20 firefighters from Bilston, Dudley, Wolverhampton and Tipton, and one hydraulic platform from Walsall at a fire on Webb Street in Coseley.

"Please avoid the area until further notice to allow our crews to deal with the incident."

It was later confirmed by West Midlands Fire Service that the fire had been extinguished around 5am, with one crew left at the scene to dampen down and secure the site.

A spokesman for West Midlands Fire Service said: "Shortly before 7.15pm on Monday 25 March, we responded to Webb Street, Coseley.

"Five fire engines and a hydraulic aerial platform from Bilston, Tipton, Wednesbury, Wolverhampton and Dudley responded initially, the first arriving within five minutes of being mobilised. They were supported by colleagues from our technical rescue unit.

"This was a fire involving six shipping containers, used as office space. Technical Rescue crews created several access points into the containers to assist with tackling fire spread. Drone operations assisted firefighters.

"Good progress was made and, by 5am, we had significantly scaled down our resources. Firefighters have remained at the scene, extinguishing hotspots.

"We expect to have a presence at the scene throughout the day. One crew remain on-site.

"No injuries were caused as a result of this incident."

The cause of the blaze is not yet known.
