Kyra, who had suffered declining health in recent weeks, was put to sleep after consultations with the zoo's veterinary team.

The 17-year-old was born at Edinburgh Zoo in 2006 and joined from Twycross in 2009 with her sister Asha, both becoming firm favourites at the Castle Hill attraction.

Asha, also aged 17, will remain in the one-acre Lion Ridge paddock, where she will be joined by a new arrival in the coming months.
