The controversial plan to redevelop green space where the former Brandhall Golf Course once stood has seen around 200 objections being lodged with the local authority.

However, in a meeting on Wednesday evening, Sandwell Council's planning committee unanimously agreed to approve the outline planning application.

This means the proposal will progress to a reserve planning application, where the council will look at the proposals in more detail.

The motion to approve the plans was objected by Councillor Jay Anandou, who represents the Old Warley ward, and local resident Graham Walker, founder of the not-for-profit organisation, The Hive Effect.

Councillor Anandou said: "With more than 83 per cent of residents saying no to the development in the public consultation, the cabinet went ahead with the proposed destruction of Brandhall. The rest is history."

One of the key issues of contention during the meeting was the impact of the proposed development on wildlife, and whether a full environmental impact assessment should be carried out.
