'It's never too late to start again' - Grief stricken Birmingham man turns life around with launch of successful business scoops prestigous award
A Birmingham man who rebuilt his life after the loss of his mum and being on the brink of homelessness has shown it’s ‘never too late to start again’.
Karl Wilson scooped the ‘Learning for Work Award’ at the West Midlands Combined Authority (WMCA) Adult Learning Awards this week at a ceremony in Birmingham’s Grand Hotel.
The 63-year-old was recognised for his resilience, determination and passion in making a new start despite the challenges he faced.
He was forced to give up his successful computer business to become a full time carer for his mum when she developed Alzheimers.
Things got even tougher for Karl after his mum passed away and found himself facing homelessness while suffering with depression.
But he got on a training programme funded by WMCA and run by Release Potential and was able to turn his life around and become a learning recruitment officer.

Karl said: “My mum was not just my mum – she was my friend and when I lost her I didn’t know where to turn.
“Before finding the course, I felt like I had no future. But the training with Release Potential has helped me rediscover my value and purpose.
“I now have a job I love, and I’m helping others find their path too. It’s never too late to start again.”
The Adult Learning Awards showcase the achievements of adult learners, as well as the collaborative efforts of employers and training providers working in partnership with the WMCA.
A total of 10 learners were handed awards while a further five received special commendations
Richard Parker, Mayor of the West Midlands, said: “Karl’s journey is a powerful reminder that learning, coupled with the right support can unlock new beginnings and brighter futures and clearly demonstrates the life-changing impact of adult education.
“The Adult Learning Awards are a wonderful opportunity to celebrate our adult learning champions and show that there is a wealth of talent and enormous potential in the region.
“It’s an important opportunity to recognise the role played by employers and supporting organisations to help residents improve their employment prospects, whether through apprenticeships, skills bootcamps, or other innovative programs.
“These awards showcase the incredible work already changing people’s lives. Congratulations to the winners, highly commended and everyone who has been involved for sharing your inspirational experience and journeys.”
