Officers acting, on a tip-off, found the weapon, which was hidden in the front garden of a home on Ashbourne Road.
It was discovered just after 3.30pm on Saturday.
A spokesman for West Midlands Police has confirmed no one has been arrested.
Ashbourne Road is in the Heath Town estate of the city and is less than a mile from Eastfield Primary School.
