From books to magic: Year 9 students' inspiring journey

On Monday 30 June, Wolgarston School in Penkridge rewarded 48 outstanding Year 9 students for their dedication to reading and academic achievement. This was a fantastic celebration acknowledging all their hard work on the school’s Accelerated Reader scheme. The students were treated to an unforgettable trip to the Warner Brothers Harry Potter Studio Tour. The students and staff accompanying them experienced the magic and wonder of the wizarding world.

As the students boarded the coach, kindly provided by Majestic Travel, anticipation buzzed in the air. Many of the students on the trip had already read J.K. Rowling's beloved series and visiting the studio offered them a chance to step into Harry Potter's world.

The magical journey began as they arrived at the Warner Bros. Studio Tour in Leavesden, where the renowned films were created. Before entering the venue, the group encountered the giant chess pieces from the film. Students entered the foyer to be greeted by a gigantic dragon.

Some of the highlights of the tour for staff and students was the opportunity to explore authentic film sets, including the Great Hall, Diagon Alley and the Dursley household. The students marvelled at the detailed props and costumes as well as having their photo taken on a Nimbus broomstick reenacting a scene from the famous quidditch match.

“I really enjoyed myself,” said Sophia Cooper (Year 9 student), “I managed to take photos of all the sets, I even managed to get a photo of Dobby for my Nan!”

As the day drew to a close, it became evident that this reward transcended the confines of a simple trip. It was a day filled with inspiration, wonder and a deeper connection to literature. The Harry Potter Studio Tour was not only a celebration of achievement for the Wolgarston students but is also a reminder of the power of reading, how it can transform and ignite imaginations.

“At Wolgarston High School we believe in recognising and rewarding the hard work and effort of our students, this trip shows our students the value of hard work and the joys that come when we challenge ourselves to read, learn, and grow,” said Mr Andy Greenwood (Assistant Head), “For our Wolgarston students, this magical adventure will undoubtedly remain a cherished memory for years to come, encouraging them to soar even higher in their academic pursuits.”

“Well done to all our reading champions of 2025! In the words of J.K. Rowling, ‘There’s always room for a story that can transport people to another place.’ Through our students hard work, they were able to have a magical reward and amazing experiences,” said Miss Sarah-Jane Roberts (Learning Resources Centre Administrator), “It was a pleasure to organise the trip for our students who have worked so hard. This year our Year 9 students have read over 1,500 books which is an amazing achievement!”
