Humble Boy by Charlotte Jones heading to Oldbury Rep

“You know, Felix, bumblebees shouldn’t be able to fly… They don’t obey the laws of physics. But they fly anyway.” All is not well in the Humble Hive. Felix Humble is a Cambridge astro-physicist in search of a unified field theory. Following the sudden death of his father, Felix returns to his middle England home and his difficult and demanding mother, where he soon realises that his search for unity must include his own chaotic home life.

First performed at the Royal National Theatre in 2001 (being awarded Best New Play by the Critics’ Circle in the same year), this poignant comedy cleverly parallels and interlaces seemingly disparate themes, from dysfunctional family relationships to beekeeping and theoretical physics. Mirroring the inner thoughts perspective of Hamlet, the lead character Felix, explores the depths of despair, inner turmoil, loss and longing. His return home leads him on a turbulent journey of discovery and revelation, but will he find his unified field theory, the theory of everything - both in the cosmos and his own inner universe?
