Albion boss Roy Hodgson has admitted the club must act quickly to land a new second-choice goalkeeper after losing Boaz Myhill to Birmingham.

Myhill joined Blues on loan on Friday in lieu of a loan fee for new Baggies signing Ben Foster.

And Hodgson admitted the speed of events had left the club starting virtually from scratch in their hunt for Foster's understudy.

He said: "It happened quite quickly. We weren't certain that we would be losing Boaz.

"There was some debate about how the loan fee would be paid and in the end it was paid via Boaz, which is good for him because it gives him the chance to play some football and he wants to compete for his Wales place.

"Until Friday, when it was decided what would happen, we didn't know for sure whether we would be looking for a second goalkeeper.

"Of course, names have been bandied about but now is the time to start taking them seriously and try to find one very quickly."

Albion will continue to pay Myhill's wages during his time at St Andrew's, meaning his move to Blues effectively equates to a loan fee of around £750,000 for Foster, whose annual salary of around £1.5million will also be picked up by the Baggies.

But, despite negotiations over an option to buy Foster next summer, Albion had to settle for a straight forward season-long loan.
