Dean Smith on lookout for two more signings

Walsall manager Dean Smith wants to sign at least two more players before the transfer window closes.

The Saddlers have added three new recruits to their ranks this summer but are still short of cover, particularly at centre-back and in central midfield.

But Smith expects to have addressed that issue by the time the window shuts on September 1 – despite ruling out moves for defender Adrian Pazo and midfielder Zac Thompson who were recently on trial with the club.

"Before the window closes I'm hoping to have one or two more players in who can strengthen us," he said.

"The closing of the window is another three or four weeks away so we have time.

"In terms of Pazo, he's flown back to Spain. He did alright and I was quietly pleased with what I saw.

"But I don't think he was quite good enough for me to say 'yeah, there's a contract'. He wasn't better than what we've got.

"I think, probably, if we had six months with him, he would be. But I don't want to have to do six months with somebody – I want a player to come in straight away and be up to speed."

Smith also confirmed he offered former Leeds midfielder Thompson a short-term deal but has now moved on to other targets.

"I've heard Zac is on trial somewhere else," he added

"It was a short-term deal that was offered because I think there were too many question marks to offer him a long-term deal. "
