Birmingham-born Gobern, out of contract at Huddersfield, has rejected a new deal by Terriers boss Chris Powell and looks set to leave west Yorkshire this summer.

A tough-tackling midfielder, Coventry and Crewe are also believed to be interested in the former England Under-19 international.

Rumours had circulated Smith was only interest in signing the 24-year-old if fellow midfielder Adam Chambers failed to sign a contract extension, but the boss insists that isn't the case.

The Saddlers manager said: "I'm interested in Gobern – I like him as a player and I think he is a really good footballer.

"You always need options in midfield and we had Michael Cain on loan from Leicester last season.

"Hopefully, Sam Manton has got his injuries behind him now. He has come in for the summer training sessions and looked really good, which is pleasing.

"But it's those options that are important. Oscar is a good player who I have admired for a while. He has always been one who has been on the list and one I want to speak to."

He's also expecting the Chambers twins to sign their new deals in the coming days, with James due back from a holiday in Barcelona after the pair previously took their mum to Hawaii.

Smith said: "There is nothing sinister in the Chambers situation. I offered them both new contracts but they were taking their mum to Hawaii.

"They then got back while I was away, so it's just been a case that we have missed each other. I'm hoping it will all be sorted by the early part of this week."
