Formula One title race – how Hamilton and Vettel fared during 2017 run-in

Hamilton is 40 points clear of Sebastian Vettel in the standings.

Lewis Hamilton is closing in on a fifth world championship following his victory in Singapore on Sunday.

Hamilton is now 40 points clear of Ferrari driver Sebastian Vettel with just six races remaining.

Here, Press Association Sport looks at the two drivers’ record from last year at the rounds still to come.

RUSSIA

Qualifying – Hamilton: fourth, Vettel: first
Race – Hamilton: fourth, Vettel: second
Hamilton was mysteriously off-colour at the Sochi race last year, which took place much earlier in the season. He finished only a distant fourth. Vettel took pole, but was beaten to the flag by Valtteri Bottas.

JAPAN

Qualifying – Hamilton: first, Vettel: third
Race – Hamilton: first, Vettel: DNF
Hamilton converted his pole position into a significant victory as Vettel failed to make it to the end following a spark plug failure on his Ferrari.

UNITED STATES

Qualifying – Hamilton: first, Vettel: second
Race – Hamilton: first, Vettel: second
Hamilton has an impressive record in Austin and took the chequered flag there again last year. Vettel could finish only runner-up to the Mercedes car to leave Hamilton on the brink of title glory.

MEXICO

Qualifying – Hamilton: third, Vettel: first
Race – Hamilton: ninth, Vettel: fourth
Vettel and Hamilton collided on the first lap in Mexico with both falling to the back after stopping for repairs. Vettel recovered to fourth but Hamilton clinched the championship after crossing the line in ninth.

BRAZIL

Qualifying – Hamilton: last, Vettel: second
Race – Hamilton: fourth, Vettel: first
With the championship already decided, Hamilton made his first significant error of the season after he crashed out in qualifying. He finished fourth as Vettel won after passing Bottas at the first corner.

ABU DHABI

Qualifying – Hamilton: second, Vettel: third
Race – Hamilton: second, Vettel: third
Mercedes secured a one-two finish at the final race of the year with Bottas leading Hamilton home. Vettel completed the podium.
