Britain’s Dominic Inglot is through to his first grand slam quarter-final since 2015 after victory with Marcus Daniell in the men’s doubles at the Australian Open.

The 31-year-old Londoner and his New Zealand partner defeated Chile’s Hans Podlipnik-Castillo and Andrei Vasilevski of Belarus 6-4 6-3 to continue their fine run in Melbourne.

This is the third time Inglot has reached this stage having also made the last eight in 2014 and 2015, while his best run at a grand slam came at the US Open in 2015 when he reached the semi-finals with Swede Robert Lindstedt.

“I’m really happy,” he said. “I’ve had a few quarter-finals here so hopefully we can make this third time lucky in getting to the semis.”

Inglot has played with 19 different partners over the past two seasons but hopes the partnership with 28-year-old Daniell can blossom into a successful one.

He said: “It has been a tough couple of years. I’m not someone who likes playing with different people each week. I need to feel a bond and feel like we’re working towards something. He’s someone that I think will give it a good go.

“Sometimes people chop and change too soon, they think the grass is greener on the other side but sometimes the grass is greener where you water it. I think we can put in a good effort, we’ve got a good team that will help us and it’s good to see some quick results coming our way.”

There will be no third grand slam mixed doubles title in a row for Jamie Murray after he and Latisha Chan went down 7-6 (10/8) 6-4 to Australian pair Storm Sanders and Marc Polmans in the second round.

Murray won the Wimbledon and US Open crowns with Martina Hingis but was forced to switch to a new partner after the Swiss great announced her retirement at the end of last season.
